This rig is inspired by the ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard I used for my i5 build while in college. First, the idea was to max out features of socket LGA 1155 and run Windows 7. After some research, I found that LGA 1155 is the last socket to support Windows XP. This should become the ultimate XP 64 Bit PC.
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LX
When it is time to upgrade this rig I will use an ASUS P8Z77-V PRO.
CPU Socket: LGA 1155
CPU Brand: Intel
CPU Model: Core i5-2500K
CPU Speed: 3.3 GHz
Processor Core Count: 4
L2 Cache Size: 6 MB
Bus Speed: 5 GT/s
The processor will be upgraded to an Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz Quad Core 8MB, the fastest Windows XP CPU.
RAM: G.Skill 16 GB (4 x 4 GB)
For memory, I would like to try and find Mushkin Redline 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 CL7 (or CL8). If I cannot find that, I want to go with Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 32GB (4x8GB) PC3 12800
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 SC Ultra Black Gaming 4 GB GDDR5 (Not XP Compatible)
The original video card was in this build was replaced in 2019 or 2020 with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB after the original failed.
The 1050 Ti was replaced in June 2022 after I used it as a replacement in my parents' PC when their GPU stopped working.
I think the fastest GPU with WinXP support is the GeForce GTX TITAN Black, but it is very expensive and could bottleneck when paired with the i7-3770K. I think the best overall GPU for WinXP is the GeForce GTX 780 Ti.
Power Supply: Corsair HX750, 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular
Great PSU. I like to use a PSU that will stay under 50% maximum load.
Case: Antec Nine Hundred ATX Mid Tower
This case has almost everything I want, but I am looking at Cooler Master Elite 500 with ODD or Thermaltake Versa J22 for more room for cable management.
CPU Air Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition
The CPU cooler, an upgrade from stock was installed in 2021.
Solid State Drive: Western Digital Blue 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
The SSD, an upgrade from a 7200 RPM SATA HDD was installed in 2021. When I make the switch from Win7 to WinXP on this machine, the best option could be Seagate Firecuda 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SSHD, a WD Caviar Black, or an Intel 520 series SSD (firmware supports TRIM).
Fan: Antec 200mm "Big Boy" TriCool exhaust fan
Fan: Antec 120mm TriCool blue LED x3
Fan: SXDOOL 120mm Slim Fan 120X12mm
Solid cooling from the factory Antec fans. I have to use a slim fan on the side because of the height of the CPU cooler. There is exactly enough room for a 12mm fan.
CD/DVD: Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
I love LightScribe!
Keyboard: Logitech K400r - 79 Key Slim Keyboard w/3.5" Touchpad
This PC is used only occasionally. The idea is that it would have become my basement streaming PC (with Win7). This KB does the job for now.
Mouse: Microsoft Pro Intellimouse, Light Shadow
I bought this as a replacement for my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical, which was a good mouse that lasted many years before the wheel broke. Microsoft Pro Intellimouse is larger than most. I replaced it on my main rig with an EVGA X17 (that I got for free from a Twitch point redemption) because the middle mouse button is wonky after just a few months. Also, the rubber on the side button is starting to crumble. I would not buy again.
So in its current state, this rig is running Windows 7 and serving as my basement streaming PC. After it is rebuilt, it MUST be running Windows XP 64 Bit because of a 4GB memory limit on the 32 Bit OS.
